Tra le ombre che non vogliamo vedere

Through the Shadows We Refuse to See

“There are loves that overwhelm us, that make us feel alive, but at the same time teach us how fragile we can be. I experienced such a love: full of trust, freedom, and honesty. And yet, unstable like a house by the sea. Perhaps this is the paradox: we fall in love to feel whole, only to find ourselves broken. But in the end… if love is also work, why do we insist on believing that feelings alone are enough?”

I have always wondered: why do we love so badly, even when we think we love so deeply?

I lived a relationship I truly believed in. I fell completely, utterly in love. And yet, within that totality, I felt something unstable. As if the foundations shook every time I tried to take a new step. It was like living in a beautiful house built by the sea: it fills you with light, but inside, you always fear a wave might wash it away.

There were my fears: the fear of losing him, the fear of losing myself, the fear of getting hurt. And there were his, which he preferred not to face. I noticed that with me they surfaced, but he pushed them back, as if ignoring them could make them disappear. But things we refuse to confront never truly go away. They stay there, silently, and sooner or later find a way to make themselves felt.

And yet there was dialogue, so much trust. For the first time, I felt truly free to bare myself, without veils or masks. And that, to me, was precious. Because when you can expose yourself like that, without defenses, it’s as if someone welcomes you entirely: both your bright parts and your shadows. And yet, right there, in that space of intimacy, I began to waver. Because he seemed to follow a script already written, with his rules and his demands, without the willingness to rewrite anything together.

I, on the other hand, believed that love was also about rewriting. Not just accepting the other, but choosing every day to work on what divides us, on what frightens us. Love is not just an overwhelming emotion: it’s commitment, care, the courage to look within ourselves and stay, even when it becomes uncomfortable. Without that part, the flame that should warm us risks burning out.

So I found myself oscillating: between my shadows, which I tried to face, and his, which he refused to see. And the more he insisted on closing his eyes, the more I felt those shadows moving within us, shaping everything. Perhaps he didn’t realize that together we could have turned them into fertile ground: because it’s there, in shared fragility, that sometimes we grow the most.

I loved him, I still do. And I would have stayed. I would have chosen to walk beside him, even on the roughest paths, because I believed that together we could grow, become something stronger, something truer. But to grow, both must want it.

And so I ask myself: is it possible that love is not enough? That the strength of our feelings is not sufficient to fill the voids we refuse to face?

I only know this: if there had been that willingness, we would have saved each other. Perhaps one day… when our fears have lost their power, when we are ready to truly look into each other’s eyes without defenses, we will find each other again. Perhaps one day we will understand that all of this was not an end, but merely a passage. And then it will be different: we could choose to stay, to grow together, to turn our shadows into strong roots. I still believe, deep down, that there is a time to get lost and a time to find each other again.

And you? Do you believe there is always a “perhaps one day” for the loves that live inside us, or are some goodbyes truly forever?
